I’ve always been drawn to music as a way to focus and ground myself. Even in highschool, I would hide an ear phone behind my black and fire engine red matte of hair.
Starting my career in retail meant I had everything from gangster rap to tough-boy hardcore blaring in my ears while I tried to work so I guess I’ve just been conditioned to work better in noisy environments.
Now that I’m working from home, I find I need a little more calm in my space when I’m knuckling down to tackle as much work as I can during nap time so here’s My Top 5 Artists To Work To.
Angus & Julia Stone
Their upbeat, calm, mellow sounds are the perfect kind of vibes you want to cruise you into the working afternoon and they’re my go-to for my afternoon work session.
Fleetwood Mac
Sometimes I need a few good bangers to get me really pumping, when I’m doing repetitive work – this is what I crave. There’s a beautiful rhythm that can be found while typing to Tusk.
John Butler Trio
This is what I throw on when Cypress is awake but I still need to get shit done. I pull out all his musical instruments, let him have a bash on his tambourine, throw his maracas around the lounge room and I can sing along to entertain him. Thank god we don’t have neighbours!
Upbeat Chill Mix
I legit typed this into YouTube once when I was at the gym and found some true gold. It’s the kind of music that plays at a cafe – mildly familiar but easy to drown out. I play these sorts of mixes first thing in the morning. As soon as Cypress is down at 9am, a fresh coffee is made, ABC Kids goes the fuck away and these chilled tunes fill the house as I tackle my day.
Rufus
This may not be for everyone but when you need an almighty kick up the ass – this is what you want. They’re young, fresh, eclectic and I just can’t help but move and groove my way through my work when these boys are filling my ears.
Everything I use to work to I just look up on YouTube and I’ve created a folder for my work music so I never have to search or remember what I’m loving. Every now and then I go looking for some new bangers which is where my loyalty to Triple J benefits me well.
What music gets you pumping through your work load? I’m always on the hunt for new inspiration.
